STARTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PROCESS
This project differs a lot compared to the other projects I’ve been working with since at the time I got hired had the UX already been done. So my first challenge was to find out a visual identity who would work both for social media, product, and website. Later on, are we looking into UX and the strategy behind - I believe this project is reflecting a lot to the reality.
I believe one of the biggest challenges has been to lower the ambition and what the product could be, in order to come out to the market with an MVP to prove the concept, with a scalable foundation. When you work for a startup you’d need to ask yourself, “where is the minimal effort for the package of a product who is great enough to attract customers?”.
To identify how to communicate and to whom, we’d narrow down three primary target groups to start communicating both in a visual and tones of voice. Our primary target groups: Parents, Fashionistan and The conscious one. Open up the slideshow below to find out more.
Visual identity
To create a visual identity is one of the biggest but funniest challenges you can do as a designer, things I’d have in mind when I created it was ”how can I make Zmartbag to a modern disruptive tech company whom you will remember”. Another challenge was to align one language to multiple channels as marketing, website, extension, checkout and further on apps and other interesting channels and still be eye-catching. And the last one was ”how can I make sure that my design delivery implements correct without even talk with the coders?”.
High fidelity mockups
This is our first outcome, the extension is more scaled-down since we want our customers to focus on the products and the brands they are buying from and the website and marketing are the opposite since we want to attract the customer and stand out from the crowd.
Checkout
This is our first outcome, the extension is more scaled-down since we want our customers to focus on the products and the brands they are buying from and the website and marketing are the opposite since we want to attract the customer and stand out from the crowd.
Reflection
I believe one of the biggest challenges for me has been to take ownership of the design when I jumped in the middle of the process - but also has helped me to grow as a designer since you both own your work and the outcome of the design. What I also have learned and understand is the importance of process work, since a startup often is lacking when it comes to that part is it a great opportunity to make your own design structure. I will show you how I did in ”design a startup part 2”One thing who is amazing with working at a startup is the speed you need to have to survive because it will always be better to test your thesis on the market and go back to your painting board and develop.
